Family Photos That Actually Feel Like Your Family
Not a battle of “stand here and smile
If your idea of family photos is wrestling your kids into outfits, bribing them to smile, and hoping for one decent photo, I’m here to tell you, that’s not your only option. Some of the best family photos don’t come from forcing kids to pose. They come from letting them be kids.
The Shift: From Posing to Playing
Most people think family sessions look like:
Everyone lined up
Looking at the camera
Smiling on command
And for about… 30 seconds? Sure, we can get that.
But it’s not the only way to capture your bond. Some other moments worth capturing:
The way your kid grabs your hand
The chaos of everyone laughing at once
The in-between moments you don’t even realize are happening
Why Activities Change Everything
Kids don’t want to “take photos.” They want to:
Move
Play
Explore
Do literally anything else
So instead of stopping that, we lean into it. Activities take the pressure off, create natural interactions, give kids something to focus on, let personalities come through
👉 Which means you get real moments, not forced ones.
*My mom’s favorite photo from our childhood sessions isn’t a perfectly posed one, it’s my little brother with a squeezable basketball shoved in his mouth, something he used to do when he was crawling around and wanted to bring a toy with him. Click; the camera caught it. It’s not perfect, it’s not posed. It’s him.
What This Actually Looks Like
Instead of:
“Stand here. Look at me. Smile.”
It looks like:
Walking together down a trail
Playing tag in an open field
Tossing a kid in the air
Spinning in circles
Sitting on a blanket and just hanging out
And yes, we’ll still grab a few “everyone looking” photos along the way.
Hot Take: Your Kids Don’t Need to Be Perfect
They don’t need to:
Sit still
Smile on cue
Listen the entire time
In fact, when they don’t that’s usually when the best photos happen.
👉 The giggles.
👉 The stubborn moments.
👉 The personality.
That’s your family.
Let Them Move
Movement is everything in family sessions.
Running, jumping, exploring—it all creates:
Natural connection
Real expressions
Photos that feel alive
If your kid wants to run?
We’re running.
Build the Session Around Something
If you’re not sure what to do, start with a simple activity:
Bring a blanket + snacks → relaxed, lifestyle feel
Go to a park → space to move
Walk somewhere meaningful → more connection
Beach or water → built-in play
👉 It doesn’t need to be complicated. It just needs to be real.
Keep It Comfortable
If your kid hates their outfit…
We’ll know.
So will the photos.
Stick with:
Comfortable clothes
Movement-friendly pieces
Things they actually like wearing
👉 A happy kid > a perfect outfit. Every time.
Let Go of the Timeline
Kids don’t run on a schedule.
And honestly? That’s okay.
I build sessions with flexibility so we can:
Follow the energy
Pivot when needed
Capture moments as they happen
Not force them.
My Approach
I’m not here to control your kids.
I’m here to:
Guide gently
Give prompts, not commands
Create space for moments to happen
And then be ready to catch them when they do.
What You’ll Walk Away With
Not just a gallery of smiling faces.
But:
Your kid mid-laugh
The way you look at them
The chaos that somehow feels like home
Photos that feel like your life, not a version of it.
